Monarchy of the Gambia

The monarchy of the Gambia was the system of government in which a hereditary monarch was the sovereign of The Gambia from 1965 to 1970. The Gambia shared the Sovereign with the other Commonwealth realms, including the United Kingdom. The monarch's constitutional roles were mostly delegated to the Governor-General of the Gambia. The royal succession was governed by the English Act of Settlement of 1701.

The monarchy was abolished on 24 April 1970, when the Gambia became a republic within the Commonwealth, with the President of Gambia as head of state.
