Mucocutaneous leishmaniasis is diagnosed on clinical grounds supported by tests which include (a) identification of the organism in a lesion imprint or skin biopsy (I); (b) identification of the species and subspecies of the etiological agent by different means such as the use of monoclonal antibodies (2), isoenzyme profiles (3) or DNA probes (4); and (c) determination of the host's response to the agent by means of the Montenegro skin test (5).
