Excerpt: Cape Canaveral Air Station, August 29. The inaugural flight of Lockheed Martin?s Atlas V launch vehicle took place on Wednesday, August 21, representing a historical milestone for the U.S. commercial space transportation industry. The Atlas V is the first of the new generation of Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicles (EELV) developed as part of the U.S. Air Force program to enhance space launch reliability and reduce costs. The Atlas V lifted off from a newly-designed launch pad at Cape Canaveral?s Complex 41, at approximately 6:05 pm, EDT, successfully delivering the Hotbird 6 satellite into geostationary transfer orbit.
